Darrell Lake was once a truck driver, making week-long hauls across the continent and returning home to Nova Scotia for weekends with his family. In May 2007, he rolled his personal truck on a curve on the Trans-Canada Highway just outside Antigonish. He now pursues his passions in a different way, breeding dogs, fixing up machinery, and driving the van he adapted to suit his new needs. He lives with a full-time carer, Lucia, who came from the Philippines four years ago to allow Darrell to continue to live in his home, a trailer on the same parcel of land where his grandfather started a homestead decades ago.

This is his life after the crash.
